The
ancestral home of the Tagores at Jorasanko, better known as the "Thakurbari",
where Rabindranath Tagore was born, spent a substantial part of his life
and even breathed his last, was converted into an art museum in the year
1961 and forms a part of the Rabindra Bharati University premises. The
objective of this museum is to perpetuate the memory of the Nobel Laureate
as well as that of the other distinguished members of the Tagore family.
It also aims at preserving the cultural history of the nineteenth and
early twentieth century Bengal.
