Indian Museum

When Kolkata became the administrative headquarters of the East India Company in 1772, it became obvious that this city would become the foremost beneficiary of British interest in Indian culture. Soon the first museum was set up in line with the British Museum in terms of its comprehensive coverage of art, archeology and natural sciences.

Internationally well known and having completed 185 years of its existence, the Indian Museum is one of those heritage buildings which are well maintained and therefore, in good shape. It is not only the oldest museum in India but also perhaps the oldest in Asia.
