Raja
Rammohan Roy's Residence, seen in the background, is in ruins. The founder
of the Asiatic Society and a great reformer who brought about the end
of the practice of Sati (burning of widows in their dead husband's funeral
pyre). He was the first Indian educationist who introduced advanced learning
to India, fought actively against child marriage and advocated widow re-marriage.
It is a wonder that nobody has thought of restoring his original residence
in respect for a man who brought about so much positives in our society.
That the work of this great educationist is still as important even today
as two centuries ago is beyond question.
