The
courtyard of an old house in Baghbazaar (North Kolkata) reflects the taste
of local kings and landlords who owned considerable landed property and
enjoyed the patronage of the British administration. Western architectural
forms are clearly discernable fused with traces of Indian ornamental elements.
This house belonged to the Boses of Baghbazar who were probably influenced
by the western education while retaining the indigenous functional aspects
of building mansions whose main entranceway and drawing lounge were separated
from the living quarters by an inner courtyard.
