Demolished Buildings   Back to Now and Then

M any fine buildings, such as the University Senate Hall, have been demolished. Others like the Silver Mint and Prinseps' Ghat, have been allowed to decay, victims of shortsighted neglect, yet it is buildings such as these which create the image and character of the city. The key to the economic and social renewal of Kolkata lies in the effective conservation of its past and the enhancement of its historic centre. If other countries like Australia, Canada, Singapore, Malaysia and the West Indies have recognized the value of their colonial heritage, why is India lagging behind?
