The preliminary history and findings about our family is, the origin of Dutt, they are in known in Bengali as Kulin and belonging to the Gandha Banik (Spice Merchant) caste. As per the ancient novel Mansha Mangal, Chand Banik alias Chand Saudagar used to worship Lord Shiva. According to his quote: In which hand I have worshipped Shankar Bhawani, how can I worship Goddess Mansha by the same hand.

From the various details and research that we can make out Chand Saudagar used to live in Champak Nagar, which in the modern days is situated somewhere in Birbhum District, West Bengal. In another evidence we have learned that Dhanapati Saudagar and Srimanta Saudagar is of the same origin of Chand Saudagar. While on business trip to Ceylone (Srilanka) Dhanapati Saudagar and Srimanta Saudagar got the dream of Devi Kamala Kamini (Maha Lakshmi) and received her blessings.

We have documents of the origin from Late Balaram Dutt who is descendants of Chand Saudagar origin Dhanapati Dutt.

Balaram Dutt used to stay in Na Para at Burdwan, West Bengal. Later on he shifted around late seventh century to Hathkhola, Sovabazar, then under Sutanati village on the sides of Bhagirathi river and started his business. Later on he became famous as Na Para's Dutt. The family spread across both sides of Bhagirathi. Bholanath Dutt, decendant of Balaram Dutt, came from a very poor family and with the early death of his father he had to start his livelihood from 13 years of age, he used to work in the shop of Babu Thakur Das Nag, but he had ambition and wanted to come up in life. On attaining adulthood he sold the property received from his maternal uncle for Rs.800/- and started business of paper at China Bazar, Calcutta. In a few years time his hard work paid off and he became famous as Paper tycoon. Bhola Nath Dutt started the Shiva Durga Puja in the year 1905 at Bholanath Ashram, D/34/43, Bengalitola, Godhulia, Varanasi that was one of his residential houses. The puja was started by following the traditional ritual of establishment of 2 Shiva Linga at Varanasi.

After the death of Bholanath Dutt his 4 sons (Janaki Nath, Raghunath, Bireswar and Bibhuti) continued the puja with same devotion at Varanasi till the year 1913, thereafter due to business pressure the puja was shifted to Calcutta house at Sovabazar that was in the year 1914 till 1925. After that due to shortage of living space they purchased the house now known as Bholanath Dham, 33/2, Beadon Street, Calcutta - 700 006. The puja is being held till date in the same place.

About our Shiva Durga and Puja:
The Dutt family is the worshipper of Shiva and one of the ancestors dreamt of the present image Shiva Durga (Hara Parbati) where Devi wanted puja by the hands of him, thereafter we are worshipping the image, where Lord Shiva is ridding the ox and on Shiva's lap Goddess Durga is sitting and on the sides of Lord Shiva Goddess Lakshmi and Saraswati along with their brothers Lord Kartick and Ganesha. The Puja since 1905 is performed with same dedication, devotion, tradition with love and respect. With the change of times we had to change the famous idol maker Late N. C. Pal, as there is no one in his family. Presently Ram & Lakhan Pal creates the idol.

The puja starts with the awakening up of Devi Durga known as Bodhan, which happens to be the day after the Mahalaya from where the Devi Pakshya starts. On the evening of Shasthi the ritual starts with Bel (wood apple) Baran and decoration of Kala Bau (Banana Plant). On Sapthami the day starts early in the morning when the Kala Bau is taken to river Ganges for bathing and puja. After returning back with the Kala Bau adorned with Sari the puja of Goddess Durga begins by her bathing with holy waters from various seas, rivers and perfumes and soil everyday till Nabami. In the morning we have Puspanjali till Nabami and Arati everyday in the morning and evening. As per the tradition the Kumari Puja is held on Maha Asthami morning. On the mid of Maha Asthami and Nabami the Sandhi Puja is held with special Bhogh.

We have some special ritual: Resin Burning (Dhuna Porano), it is performed by the ladies on Asthami morning when ladies whose any wish have been fulfilled or has any wish to Goddess Durga, sits in front of the idol braced in new sari with earthen pot on her both hands and head, the priest while uttering sacred mantras put the resin in the earthen pot and burns it, known as Dhuna Porano, after performing the ritual the family members will sit on the lap of the elders and thereafter touch there feet and aseek her blessings.

Another very interesting of our Puja is "Kumari Puja" which is celebrated on the day of Astami with gay and gaiety. Come and visit us during the Puja days and have a first hand experience of Durga Puja in Bonedi Paribaar, that still exists in the City of Joy".

On Dashami, after the Arati, the priest in a bowl puts turmeric, water and perfume and immerses a mirror in the said bowl. The family members will view the goddess foot in the reflection in the water and this is the completion of the immersion of the goddess. After that the family will collect the blessing flower from the hands of the priest. In the evening before the idol is taken away for immersion the ladies of the family will circle around the goddess (Baron). Thereafter the Baron the symbolic known as Kanakanjali takes place, in the Bengali culture when the daughter leaves for her in laws house for the first time with her husband put rice and coin in her mothers end part of sari (anchal) which means that she is giving back whatever she has eaten in her fathers house. The same thing is done here where the (elder Person) of the house receives it from his wife and she will go back without looking back at the goddess face. The meaning here is Goddess Durga has come to her fathers place with husband and children and after enjoying for 4 days going back to her in-laws house and before returning she is giving blessing for prosperity and happiness to the father's family.

Our goddess is of single frame and we bring back the frame after dismantling the idol and immersing it. The frame dates back from 1905.
We request you to be with us and bless us so that we can keep on continuing with the tradition and heritage for the next 100 years and more.
