Great Personalities
(some of the great souls of Bengal who are still remembered by us)

Surendra Nath Bandopadhyay, the great son of Bengal, was born on November 10, 1848 at Taltala in the central part of Kolkata. His father Durga Charan Bandopadhyay was an eminent doctor of those days. He did his schooling in the English medium school where Indians had hardly any opportunity to study. He did not have a private tutor. By his intelligence and perseverance, he proved his worth in school.

After completing his graduation, he went to London and passed the Civil Services examination. He was first posted at Sillet in erstwhile East Bengal as Deputy Magistrate. But he could not cope up with the directives of the British Bosses and resigned from the service. He then joined Vidyasagar's Sanskrit College

and a Professor in English Department. His patriotism made him to leave the lucrative civil services and joined hand with Iswarchandra for the upliftment of the Indians.

Later, he founded a college where he was the Principal. The college is known as Rastrogruru Surendra Nath College and is located in Sealdah of Kolkata.

He then joined Indian National Congress and served as a congressman till his death. He was elected twice as Congress President.

The British Government wanted to divide Bengal into two parts. The eastern part was proposed to be merged to Assam and the western part was to be added to Bihar. Surendranath led the agitation against this mischievous deed. The agitation was named as Banga Bhanga Andolan. Due to his leadership and mobilizing public opinion all over India, the British authorities had to restrain themselves from initiating action on the matter. He was named as Rastro Guru.

The great patriot died at the age of 77 in Barrackpore on August 06, 1925.
