Q Is snoring hazardous for life ?

A Snoring is no longer to be considered a rather humorous, frivolous sign of no clinical significance. Snoring is a common feature of sleep apnoea syndrome.

Q What is Sleep Aponoea Syndrome ?

A This is a phenomenon where night time sleep is interrupted by episodes of cessation of air flow at the nostrils and mouth for at least ten seconds (apnoea). It causes excessive day time sleepiness and may lead to pulmonary hypertension, Cardiac arythmias, mental disfunction, heart failure and sudden death.


Q What is the Incidence ?
A Incidence figure for snoring states that 53% of an adult male population will snore intermittently and 31% regularly. For women, the figures given are 38% snoring intermittently and 19% regularly.


Q What is it's relation with age ?
A Snoring increases with age and upto 60% of men and 40% of women between the age of 60 and 65 will snore. In the 30 - 35 age group, the percentages are only 20% for men and 5% for women.
