Mirik

Mirik is a small town in the eastern Himalayan mountain range. It is about 50 km from Siliguri and 35 km from Darjeeling.

Spread around the gentle slopes by the lake Sumendu, the small town of Mirik is an idyllic spot for a romantic holiday away from the hustle and bustle of Darjeeling

and other larger towns. Here you can put up in log cabins, spend time hanging around the cobbled pathway that encircles the lake, go boating on the lake itself or get away to a picnic spot in an alpine forest carpeted with wild flowers.

Mirik's pleasant climate and abundant sunshine makes the place even more attractive for visitors. Added to that are the magnificient view of the hills in the north and the vast expanse of plains below.

Mirik is the largest producer of oranges in this region. You can visit the orchards situated about two kilometres away. The town is also surrounded by tea estates like the Thurbo Tea Estate. Visitors are allowed to visit the factory to observe the production of tea and buy fresh tea leaves from the garden.

Where to go
Some of the major attractions of Mirik are:

  • The Sumendu Lake (boating, angling)
  • Rameetay Dara viewpoint
  • Deosi Dara viewpoint
  • Rai-Dhap picnic spot
  • Orange orchards
  • Cardamom Grove
  • Singha Devi Mandir (temple) at Debi-Stan.

A day's trek down to the river Balasun to Namshu and again climbing uphill to Kurseong on the opposite mountain range is a fascinating experience. On the way you will come across tea gardens, orange orchards and small villages where you can come close to the rustic way of life led by the hardworking hill folk.

How to go

Mirik is well connected to both Darjeeling and Siliguri from where it takes about a couple of hours to reach there by road. You can also go for a short trip to Mirik and come back on the same day from Darjeeling and Siliguri. Siliguri is well connected with rest of India by Road, Rail and Air. The rail station is New Jalpaiguri. Airport is Bagdogra.

Where to stay
On the way down to the plains from Mirik is Dudhia situated by the banks of the river Balasun where the D.G.H.C Tourism department has built a way-side inn called "Gakul". This is a popular picnic spot and stopover for travellers. Lodging facilities are also available.
