(some of the great souls of Bengal who are still remembered by us)

Jagadish Chandra Bose, the great son of Bengal was born at Maimansingha on November 30, 1858. Died at Giridih on November 23, 1937.

Bose had invented the wireless system, life in plants and the Electro Magnetic force. He was born at Maimansingha, (presently in Bangladesh) of undivided Bengal where his father Bhagawan Chandra Bose was posted as Deputy Magistrate. He had his basic education in St. Xaviers School and College at Kolkata. After he did his graduation, he went to England and did his graduation in Science from Cambridge University. After he had returned from Cambridge, he joined Presidency College, Kolkata as visiting Professor.

He started his research on different subjects at this time and kept himself busy in multi pronged research activities. Physics was his basic subject for research. He experimented that long distance communication can be had through Radio Wave without the help of cable or wire, which were then in use. Unfortunately before his thesis was submitted and had recognition from the Royal College of Science, Italian Scientist Macroni had submitted his thesis papers and was declared the official investor of Radio. Bose also had discovered the presence of magnetic force around the electric current flown through any substance, The London University bestowed him with Doctor of Science for these two successful invention.

Later on, Bose devoted himself with Botany and proved before the authorities that plants had life. They could feel pleasure and pain. For proving this, he had manufactured by himself many instruments. This had worldwide recognition. Till then people did not know that the plants and trees had life.

After having retired from his services, Bose established a Laboratory where he devoted and experimented till his last days. The laboratory now is known as Basu Bijnan Mandir and is situated at Acharya Prafulla Chandra Road in north Kolkata between Manicktola and Rajabazar. Students, Researchers and Scholars now have the opportunity to experiment and do advance research in this laboratory.

Bose was a good writer too. His book "Abyakta" in Bengali was very popular in those days. Bose is amongst the few ones for whom, Bengalis, Kolkata people in general and India in general can boast of his contribution to science. The great son of Bengal is remembered by all and will remain in the mind of people.
