First India tour of West Indies
It was in 1932 when India first played cricket test match. Immediately after independence India went to Australia. That was the first foreign test series of India.

India played West Indies at the home grounds for the first time after independence. Amongst the first five test series 1st, 2nd and 3rd test ended in draw. But in the fourth test match West Indies won by 193 runs and an inning. Again in the fifth test match ended in draw in Mumbai.

First Test at Delhi
The first test was held at Firoz Sah Kotla stadium in New Delhi from November 10 - 14, 1948. There was

Col. Hemu Adhikari

an interesting incident that took place in this test when the ball was to be replaced six times. Winning the toss, West Indies captain Godard chose to bat first. Ray and Stolmaire started the match very well as opening partner. Fadkad and Amarnath started attacking. Both the bowlers could not make any fruitful result. Then Rangachari started bowling and the whole situation changed in a twinkling of an eye. The first two batsmen of West Indies got back to the pavilion in 22 runs. Then Walcott came and scored 14 in one over.

On the second day, the two batsmen went back to the pavilion within five minutes of the match started. West Indies scored 302 for 5. This is the record of West Indies against India. At the end of the second day, West Indies scored 524 for 8. At the beginning of the third day's match, West Indies Innings ended with 631 runs. Walcott, Gomes, Wicks and Christiani scored century.

India's start was not good at all. Mankad went back to the pavilion scoring only five runs. The new comer K.C. Ibrahim and Rusi Modi played steadily. They took India to a comfortable position scoring 85 and 63 runs. Followed by them Lala Amarnath bated well and scored 65 runs. Hemu Adhikari made his lone life time century scoring 114 runs. But that could not resist India from follow-on although India scored 454 runs.

India started their 2nd innings on the fifth day morning and scored 220 runs losing 6 wickets. Ibrahim scored 44. Modi 367 and Lala Amarnath too made 36. Hemu and Sarbate remained unbeaten with 29 and 35 runs. The test ended draw.
