India's
First Tour to Australia after Independence
continued.
In
the last series, all about the first two test matches
India played with Australia after Independence were
described. In this session, the rest of the three test
match report is being made.
|
Third
Test Match - Melbourne : 1st Week of January, 1948
India lost the third test match by 233 runs. In the first
innings, India declared scoring 291 for 9 against an immense
394 made by the Aussies. Bradman played a devastating
132, accompanied rightly by Hasset (80). Vinu Mankad of
India scored a responsible 116. Fadkad scored 55. However,
Australian fast bowler Lindwal, having the spine-chilling
reputation couldn't pick up a single stamp. But Ian Johnson
was able to create havoc blowing 4 bells. Among the Indian
bowlers, Mankad and Indian captain Amaranth took 4 wickets.
Bradman once again proved himself the crownless king of
cricket scoring another century (127) in the 2nd innings.
Morris too scored a 100. Amarnath was the only successful
Indian bowler. But the Indian batting line proved to be
a complete failure, highest score being only 28 (Gul Mohammed).
The shattering bowling of W. Johnston and Ian Johnson
literally collided the Indian line up. |

Fadkad,
the highest scorer |
This
time too, India lost the match by 16 runs. In the first
innings Australia scored 674, their highest in the series.
In reply, India ended in 381. . . . . and so a follow
on. It was crystal clear that the Indians could never
compete with Bradman's indelible 201 and Hasset's dazzling
198 (not out). Rangachari bagged 4 wickets. Indian batsmen
began with quite a promise. Opener Mankad scored a good
ground (49). Hazare's mind catching 116 and Fadkad's stable
and able 123 endowed Indian cricket with a new prestige.
Amarnath scored 46. Johnson bagged 4 Indian stamps. Hazare
(102) faced the follow on bravely. This time Lindwal (8-3-21-4)
swept the Indian batsman to the pavilion. |

This
time, the Aussies took over India by 177 runs and an innings.
Bradman's army declared only after securing 575 for 8 wickets.
Bradman (57) returned to pavilion wounded. Neil Harvey made
a brilliant century (153). Brown's big innings (99) and Lokston's
80 gave the Indian bowlers a lot of trouble. Rangachari and
Mankad took 3 and 4 wickets respectively. In spite of the
heavy pressure, Mankad kept his scoring consistency (111).
Hazare scored a fair 74 and Fadkad 56. But India couldn't
save the follow on. Their 2nd innings ended in 67 runs only
as the battsmen crashed one after other.
