History of Indian Cricket (cont'd from the previous issue)

India's First Test to Australia after Independence

The Indian team left for their first tour to Australia on 08th October, 1947. It was their first International series after independence as well. It was also the first time in the history of cricket when the matches were relayed through Radio from Australia.

First Test Match
Brisbane. Nov 28, 1947 - India lost the first match to the host nation. It was a 7 day game. The match began under a cloudy weather as Australia won the toss and chose to bat.

Day 1, Nov 28 - On the first day Australia scored 273 runs on wickets with the aid of a demolishing innings of 160 not out by Sir Donald Bradman. India bowling attack was led by Lala Amarnath and SW Sohni. They opened up with inswinger and outswinger to sharpen their pace attack and gradually proved to be dangerous for the Aussies. Australia lost their first wicket for 38 runs. But the scenario changed after Bradman, the greatest maestro of cricket appeared in the picture.

Day 2, Nov 29 - Due to heavy rain, the game lasted only for an hour. Bradman & Miller added 36 runs to their side. The day ended with the Aussies at 309 for 3. Bradman scored unbeaten 179. Miller was 19 not out at the other end.

Day 3, Dec 01 - India came to bat after lunch but they were drowned into big trouble from the beginning. Their innings ended in just 58 runs and India was forced to a follow on. An English newspaper wrote on the Indian batting performance - "wickets fall like Nils at Brisbane".

The second innings was also not so fruitful for Indians. The brilliant bowling by Toshack and Lindwall again devastated the Indian batting side. India stuck to 41 for 4 at the end of the day.

Day 4 , Dec 02 - Heavy rain and bad light again affected the game. India could add only 29 runs to their scoreboard.

Day 5 , Dec 03 - The game could not proceed due to bad weather. The nature seemed to stand obstacle for an easy victory for the Aussies.

Day 6, Dec 04 - At last the climate suited for the host country. They wrapped up the Indians just for 98 runs.

Second Test match
The second test match between India and Australia took place in Sydney from 12th December, 1947.

Day 1, Dec 12 - Bad weather again struck the second test match. However, India won the toss and chose to bat. Again, the opening partnership collapsed at the very beginning. Vinoo Mankad (5) and C Sarbate (0) returned back to pavilion in quick succession. However, India managed to reach at 38 runs for 2 wickets when the day match was abandoned due to bad weather.

Day 2, Dec 13 - India could reach a respectable total of 188. Duttatreya Fadkad (51) made a valuable contribution in that context. Mckull, Johnston, Miller emerged to be very successful to take Indian wicket in a very frequent succession.

Day 3 & 4, Dec 15 & 16 - After the recess, the game was to start on the third day, but that did not happen owing to inclement weather.

Day 5, Dec 17 - Australia was almost vanquished in 107 runs. Bowlers like Vijay Hazare and Dattu Fadkad proved to be successful to pick up quick wickets. Bradman was bowled out only for 13. But Indians looked even more horrible as they replied with 61 for 7 in the second innings on the firth day.

Day 6, Dec 18 - Heavy shower ruined the match and it was finally abandoned.
