India's
Tour to England : 1946
England was scheduled to play in India in 1939-40 tour.
But, it was postponed for 10 years due to the emergence
of Second World War.
However,
India was assigned to play for another series in England
in 1946. But even then, on the verge of partition, Indian
team had a very good preparation for their forthcoming
tour. In
this tour, India won 11 out of 29 matches, lost 4 and
drew in 2 matches. Lala Amarnath and Vinu Mankad were
the star performers in that tour. But, the most memorable
event was the 10th wicket partnership of 249 runs between
Sharadindu Banerjee (Shute) (121) and Chandu Saarbate
(124) against Sarre at Oval. CS Nayadu, the leg break
bowler also cracked a hattrick in that one.

Moreover, the electrifying 242 by Vijay Marchant against
Lankshire and Yarkshire happened to be the new milestones
for Indian cricket.
The
first test match in this series held in Lords was quite disappointing
for them as England wrapped up the match by 10 wickets. Mankad
(63) and Amarnath (50) made valuable contributions, which
was overshadowed by a magnificent double century by Hardstaf
(205) for the England side.

The
rigid Indian resistance in the last 13 minutes saved the
2nd test match in Manchester. The 124 runs partnership
between Marchant (76) and Mushtaq Ali (46) supported to
build up a total to build up a respectable score in the
1st innings. However, in his first test match, Bedsar
managed to get 11 wickets in both the innings. In the
second innings, the survival of the last wicket partnership
of Sohni and Hindolkar proved to be the effective one
as it dragged out the game from host's grip and resulted
in a draw.

Match
ended in a draw
The third and final test match in Oval was literally ruined
by heavy rainfall. On 17th August, the first day of the match,
the game lasted for 29 minutes. The opening partnership of
Marchant and Mushtaq managed to contribute 79 runs. But the
match was finally abandoned due to rain.
Though
England won the Rubber, the tour was quite fruitful for the
Indians. According to Captain Iftikar Ali Khan Pataudi, it
was a successful series and his team had gathered a lot of
experience. Gradually India was emerging out as a professional
test playing nation.
