History of Indian Cricket (cont'd from the previous issue)

The First Cricket series on Indian soil
Today, India is considered as one of the nine greatest test playing nations in the world. But their first footstep in the field of test cricket was made in 1932 when a match was held between India and England in Lords. There, India was outplayed by the host country England. The first ever test match on Indian soil was conducted in December, 1932 in the Jimkhana playground of Bombay which was the first one of the three home match series. The team configurations of both the teams were as follows:



India :
CK Nayudu (Captain), Wazir Ali, JG Navle, Lala Amarnath, LP Jai, Vijay Merchant, SHM Colah, Amar Singh, Mohamed Nissar, S Ramji, RJD Jamshedji, CS Nayudu (12th man)

England :
DR Jardine (Captain), CF Walters, BH Valentine, H Elliot, H Varity, MS Nicholas, EW Clark, A Mitchell, CJ Bernett, James Laugridge, LE Townsend, Gregorry (12th man).

Though England won the match by 9 wickets, the Indian performance was quite appreciatable. Morever, the unforgettable 118 runs scored by Lala Amarnath was well regarded as a record. He became the first Indian to score a century in the history of test cricket. However, Valentine - the British batsman too made a valuable century (136) in this match.

India
1st Innings : 229 all out, 2nd Innings : 258 all out

England
1st Innings : 438 all out, 2nd Innings : 40 for 1

England won the match by 9 wickets

The second match between the two countries had started on 05th January, 1933. The match took place in the Eden Gardens of Kolkata. Here, five changes were made in Indian team. Ramji, Jamshedji, Colah, Jai and Navle were replaced by Gopalan, CS Nayudu, Naomal, Mustaq Ali and Dilwar Hussain (wicket keeper). In this match Amar Singh came to lime light for his penetrating blowling. He took the vital wickets of Walters & Bernett in the first innings. The second test ended in a draw which was an acheivement for the Indians. It was the first time when they could resist the super power of England.

1st Innings : 247 all out,
2nd Innings : 237 all out

England
1st Innings : 403 all out,
2nd Innings : 7 for 2

Match drawn
The final match of the series was played in Madras. This match appeared to be almost the repeatition of the first one. Morever, several injuries seemed to be an added trouble for the Indian team. Finally, England won the match by 202 runs. CF Walters contributed magnificient 102 runs to his team.

1st Innings : 145 all out, 2nd Innings : 249 all out (Naomal retd. Hurt)

England
1st Innings : 4335 all out,
2nd Innings : 261 for 7 declared

England won the match by 202 runs.
